Joliet Technologies designed and built a 10 DC variable speed drive system (a.k.a. SCR Drive System) for Neptune Marine Oil & Gas in Singapore. Along with the drives Joliet Technologies also supplied 2 feeder sections, 2 drilling auxiliary MCC sections and 2 5MVA drive isolation transformers.

The 10 DC Drives…
Each DC drive will run a single DC motor. The 10 drives each consist of a Siemens 6RA70 DC Drive, 1 Quad, 1660 Amp. Each with a minimum output of 1250 Amps DC. Along with draw-out circuit breakers, 600VAC main supply bus, cooling fan, front & rear exterior lighting and operator interface devices mounted on the front cabinet door. These drives will be running 6 Mud Pumps, 3 Drawworks and the Top Drive.
Each drive cabinet also included the following:

  • Space heater and stat
  • Door Stops
  • Grab Bars
  • Ammeter – DB40 type
  • Voltmeter – DDB 40 type
  • Siemens 6RA70 touch pad
  • SCR type fuse protection for each drive
  • Input Reactors for each drive
  • Control Transformer
  • IP33 Construction

Note:-
The drives were originally proposed to be 40″ (W) x 50″ (D) x 90″ (H), which is a standard size for this type of drive cabinet. But after surveying the area where the drives would be installed, it was determined that they would need to be much smaller. The final design dimensions for each cabinet was 30″ (W) x 50″ (D) x 78.75″ (H). Joliet Technologies was able to engineer and manufacture these drives in a much smaller package with no delays and no additional costs to Neptune Marine. This is one of Joliet Technologies’ biggest assets. Using Joliet Technologies’ cabinet manufacturer Chicago Switchboard’s modular design system, we were easily able to design an enclosure in the smaller size to acccomadate all the equipment needed for each drive. Most other drive systems manufacturers would not be able to do this without delays or additional costs.

The 2 Feeder Sections…
Also included in this line-up are the 2 (center) feeder sections. Both feeder sections consisting of draw-out type circuit breakers and 600VAC main supply bus:
Feeder #1 – 5000 amp CB (Secondary for transformer) & 5000 amp CB (Tie – Motorized)
Feeder #2 – 5000 amp CB (Secondary for transformer) & 1500 amp CB (Alternate feed to top drive)

The feeder section bus work had to be designed so that the Top Drive could be powered by either one of the two feeder cabinets. The complex bus design was accomplished through Joliet Technologies’ cabinet manufacturer Chicago Switchboard. Once again without any additional costs or delays.

The 2 Drilling Auxiliary MCC Sections…
Two Siemens Motor Control Centers, with the following ratings:

All of the above equipment was designed, manufactured, tested and delivered in less than 12 weeks. As of December 2008 the equipment is being installed and awaiting commissioning in Singapore.
