DC Drive Retrofits
For two decades, Avtron has specialized in modernizing old/outdated drive
systems by adding digital regulating modules. ADDvantage-32 modules, used on
Avtron's DC drives, have been configured for retrofit applications. They provide
the best performance with low installation cost and downtime.
Better Control
Process performance improves because existing drives can be speed regulated
to ±0.001%. Each drive can be configured as a speed, tension, current
regulator, or as a center driven winder/reel. Coordination and progressive draw
are included and the Avtron regulators can interface with a wide variety of
programmable controllers. Some benefits of a retrofit include:
- Eliminates failure-prone or obsolete electronics
- Eliminates pots and jumpers
- Adds modern diagnostics
- Compatible with nearly all drives
- Can be installed one section at a time
"CHUNK-A-TIZE" Your Drive Upgrade
The lost downtime resulting from a normal drive system installation often
exceeds the cost of the system. Avtron's retrofit techniques, coupled with
distributed intelligence, eliminate installation downtime. No large and
expensive "master director" or DCS is required. Regulators can be
installed one at a time, and interfaced to each other as additional ones are
added. Drives can be modernized during normal scheduled outages, without
additional downtime. Much less funding is needed by doing a large project in
this cost effective manner. Our engineers can develop a plan to phase in
("CHUNK-A-TIZE" (SM)) your section by section modernization.

AFM - Advanced Firing Modules
|

Drive modified with AFM.
|
Avtron Advanced Firing Modules are used when
it is desired to replace existing regulating electronics. The customer
retains existing motors, isolation transformers, field wiring, bus bars,
and SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) power modules, thus facilitating modernization at a fraction of
the installed cost of new drives.
Each AFM is typically provided on a panel, together with pulse
transformers to fire the existing SCRs. This is usually pre-wired to
enable the most rapid installation, minimizing downtime.
The AFM can be used with most 3 phase, full wave, SCR power bridges.
All speed, tension, position and current loops and the SCR firing circuits
are replaced by digital hardware and software-based equipment. |
| Any size power bridge can be fired, even those
with parallel SCRs. This type of retrofit is most cost effective on high
power bridges where the cost of SCRs, contactors, fuses, etc., is
significant or on applications where it is advantageous to retain the
existing cabinetry and power wiring to reduce downtime and installation
costs. |
ACM - Advanced Control Module
The ACM module is designed to provide digital outer loop control for existing
DC or AC power converters. By providing a simple analog interface to the speed
or current loop of existing equipment, the ACM eliminates modules that are old
or obsolete and coordinates the section with the overall control system.
Simplicity of the interface makes the ACM useable with almost any type of power
converter, and provides the benefits of digital setpoints, feedback, and
diagnostics.
The ACM provides full digital coordination at a low cost. It can be installed
one section at a time to cure problems with specific sections. It includes most
ADDvantage-32 diagnostics, such as the 4-channel signal analyzer.
AMG - Advanced Motor Generator Set Controller
The AMG can be used on virtually any motor or generator field. It includes a
3 phase, full wave, regenerative SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) power bridge to supply field current.
Armature current, field current, speed, position, tension, and winder loops are
closed digitally. Field forcing and field flux control algorithms are included
to provide the best possible dynamic response in demanding high speed
applications.
The AMG is most cost effective on large horsepower MG sets where regulation
improvement is desired, performance improvements like progressive draw are
needed, or electronics are simply worn out.
